Amy Barkley-Carey, a born and bred horsewoman in Sullivan County, has been teaching at her family’s Maple Woods Farm in Loch Sheldrake for over 20 years. She has all sorts of students: Some who want to learn how to handle a horse for trail rides, some who want to show their horses, some “just there for the confidence building … feeling safe and secure and in control of something.” For teenagers, the ability to manage a 1,000-pound animal in safety and comfort is “a huge confidence builder.”
But it’s not just teens she teaches. She’s seeing a lot more adult students, “particularly women who are now retiring or finding some disposable income who want to do something or return to the things that interested them as children.”
A Master Instructor, certified through the Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA), Amy spends her free time (what little of it she has!) teaching other horse people how to teach. Through CHA she has worked with riding instructors from across the country to help them gain their certification.
In addition to teaching riding lessons, she is also a volunteer firefighter for the Loch Sheldrake Fire Department. She leads large animal rescue courses to help and educate first responders.
Gabes Perfection. No other words needed. Literally the best horse in the world. 2016 runner up Program Horse of the year; this noble steed has carried hundreds of riders in lessons and in shows. He excels in everything!
Trevor is the perfect fit for our program! With an extensive show record, Trevor takes his riders to new heights... literally! This pony loves to jump and is so good at it!
Parker has returned to our program and we are so happy to have him here. This great gelding is a superb trail horse and loves to play with his friends in the pasture. He also excels as a Mounted Patrol horse doing security at Bethel Woods!
New Gucci Boots. AQHA All-around show horse trained and shown by Alora Carey. This pair has quite the impressive and extensive show record and have earned top honors in both NYSQHA and ESQHA this past year, competed at the Youth World Show and Congress.
Diligent Invitation is a 5yo APHA/NSBA gelding. With us since 10 months old, Dillon has already done many ground schools with lessons kids. He is Vinny’s nephew and shows so much promise for Hunter under Saddle and Jumping classes.
KRS Glidin Andy has been there, done everything. Rocky belongs to Morgan Hutchins. With an extensive show record, he has done a lot and is now teaching riders of all levels.
Fancy Red Ruby is beginning to make her debut in the lesson program. At 5 years old, she has a bright future ahead of her. She is a superb trail horse and will begin her show career soon.
